Tarrytown man gets 3 years in ID, Social Security theft

A Tarrytown man has been sentenced to three years in a federal prison for identity theft and stealing Social Security benefits.

Guillermo Hernandez, 50, pleaded guilty in July to mail fraud and aggravated identity theft. He admitted that he used the stolen identity of another man, Guillermo De Jesus Henriquez Pichardo, to illegally obtain more than $ 55,000 in Social Security disability benefits between February 2000 and March 2006.

The scheme was uncovered in late 2005, when Henriquez Pichardo complained to the Social Security Administration after being informed of the benefits that he had neither sought nor received. The Social Security Administration stopped paying the benefits in March 2006. Agents with the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Social Security Administration’s Inspector General’s office launched an investigation and arrested Hernandez in April 2010.

Special Agent Robert Lupo said in a criminal complaint that the original application for benefits was submitted in 1999 and included the Social Security number and date of birth of Pichardo. Crime Stoppers and investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office are searching for the person responsible for the theft of a Houston area citizen’s identity.

In October 2011, this same person was featured by Crime Stoppers for stealing the identity of numerous victims and forging counterfeit checks. Once again, the same individual has offended in Harris County.

In this particular case, the person was able to obtain one of the victim’s personal checks, personal information and banking information. He then used that information to create counterfeit checks, and proceeded to make numerous unauthorized purchases at several stores throughout the Houston area.

Surveillance cameras captured an image of the man during the course of an unauthorized purchase.
