Several people in the Metro recently found out they were victims of identity theft. Police figured out the one thing they all have in common: a restaurant.

Since Saturday, West Des Moines police have gotten 12 reports of identity theft.

Rob Christensen is one of the victims. Part of his job is to help protect information for a local business. That’s why he was particularly surprised when he found out he was one of the customers at Eastern Buffet who had their identity stolen.

“I’m very careful with all my receipts and everything. I have a shredder at home – I take every receipt and shred it,” Christensen said.

The owners of Eastern Buffet on Westown Parkway are working with police to find a suspect. We spoke to the owner who said she thinks it could be two former employees who are behind it.

The credit cards weren’t physically stolen from anyone, but the numbers were somehow obtained. The cards were used at places like Abercrombie and Fitch and Hollister at Jordan Creek Town Center.

The suspects got $ 700 out of Christensen’s…………………continues on WOI

Livingston Man Arrested for Tax Fraud, Identity Theft
Article from Patch.com:

A Livingston man was arrested this morning for allegedly filing hundreds of phony federal income tax returns. Todd P. Halpern, 46, is accused of using the identity of a dead return preparer, whose business he bought in 2008.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced that Halpern was charged by complaint with one count of tax fraud and one count of identity theft. He was arrested at his home this morning by agents of the FBI and IRS.

From 2009 through 2010, Halpern allegedly prepared and filed 657 fraudulent federal income tax returns with the IRS using the Electronic Filing Identification Number of a deceased tax return preparer. In court documents, the deceased tax returner is only referred to as “V.R.”

Halpern prepared and filed the tax returns using stolen identities of actual taxpayers, without their knowledge. The tax returns contained fraudulent income and deduction amounts, which allowed Halpern to receive tax refunds deposited directly into his personal bank account.

Halpern accumulated a total of $ 373,938 in refunds from fraudulent tax returns according to IRS agents. The funds were wired into Halpern’s personal bank account between…………………continues on Patch.com

NEWARK, N.J. — A New Jersey airport security supervisor accused of using a murdered man’s identity to hide his illegal immigrant status apparently bought the man’s birth certificate and Social Security number from an intermediary before his death, police said Wednesday.

Police don’t consider Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole a suspect in the unsolved murder of Jerry Thomas, who was shot outside a Queens, N.Y., YMCA in 1992. But they shed some light on how the 55-year-old Nigerian allegedly assumed Thomas’ identity and went on to work for 20 years as a guard and then a supervisor for a private security firm at Newark Liberty International Airport.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said investigators believe Thomas sold his identification documents to a Nigerian cab driver, who then sold them to Oyewole. Authorities have said Oyewole began using his new identity about three weeks before Thomas was shot on July 20, 1992.

Oyewole pleaded not guilty in Newark municipal court Tuesday to an identity theft charge that carries a 10-year maximum prison sentence. He also faces deportation.

NEWARK, N.J. — A Newark Liberty Airport security supervisor pleaded not guilty to identity theft Tuesday as new details emerged about his alleged 20-year odyssey of deception, including that he may have assumed the identity of a New York man weeks before the man was murdered.

Through his court-appointed attorney, Nigerian Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole pleaded not guilty to one count of identity theft, a second-degree offense punishable by a maximum 10-year sentence.

Standing in an orange prison jumpsuit and flanked by two sheriff’s officers, Oyewole appeared via video feed from the Essex County Correctional Facility where he has been held since his arrest Monday at his home in nearby Elizabeth.

Municipal Court Judge Roslyn Holmes-Grant raised his bail from $ 75,000 to $ 250,000 after Deputy Attorney General Vincent Militello noted that prosecutors believe Oyewole may have used several aliases over the years.

“We simply do not know who this gentleman is,” Militello told the judge. “Therefore he is a flight risk.”

Oyewole also has been placed under a federal immigration detainer, essentially a notification that he has been identified fo…………………continues on Washington Post

How the Rich and Famous Foil Identity Theft
Article from BusinessWeek:

Identity thieves generally pretend to be real people, create some false accounts, and spend like there’s no tomorrow. The rich and famous, on the other hand, already spend that way and are pleased to maintain their true identities. Yet they’re increasingly falsifying accounts of their own lives.

It’s always been a struggle for the wealthy to hide from the prying eyes of everyone, from curiosity seekers to criminals. Now that every transaction is tracked by retailers, government agencies, and banks, to name a few digital data hounds, it’s nearly impossible to erase the lurid details of your life.

What the wealthy can do is hire security consultants who counteract the truth with waves of false information — stories of homes not purchased, vacation destinations never visited, and cars never leased. Their hope: False information obscures the real stuff.

“The only way to truly prevent a breach of privacy is to wipe the slate clean and create a new identity,” says Jeremy M. Kroll, co-founder of K2 Global Consulting.

“Security by confusion”

HACKENSACK, N.J. _ During 20 years as a private security guard at Newark Liberty International Airport, a man known as Jerry Thomas passed multiple inquiries into his background _ by his employer, by the state and by the federal government.

But none of those turned up what authorities alleged Monday: The longtime security supervisor, a 54-year-old Nigerian national who was in the country illegally, had been using the identity of a Queens man who was murdered two decades ago.

The arrest of Thomas, whose real name is Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole, on charges of identity theft raised questions about the thoroughness of the background checks required of airport security personnel, the gatekeepers of the nation’s airports. Several agencies and the private company responsible for vetting Oyewole described an unusual set of circumstances that allowed him to slip through the screening process, exposing its limitations.

In response, officials at the Port Authority, which operates the airport, said they would “take every legally permissible step to recheck” the employees of the security company Oyewole worked for, FJC Security Servic…………………continues on OregonLive.com

Your lost loved one’s financial identity could come back to life in a most unsettling way — 2.5 million deceased Americans’ identities are misused every year, according to ID Analytics, an ID theft risk assessment company. The company’s research arm compared the names, Social Security numbers and birthdays listed on applications for credit against the Social Security Administration’s master file of deaths to come up with those numbers.

ID Analytics says crooks intentionally steal the identities of about 800,000 deceased Americans each year. The company says identity thieves also make up Social Security numbers, and inadvertently make matches with about 1.6 million people a year who have died. In addition, ID Analytics detected a disturbing pattern of theft of financial information belonging to people who were dying. It’s easy to see how that could happen, since people who are gravely ill can easily lose track of the details of their finances.

When you break it down, ID Analytics says con artists use dead people’s identities more than 2,000 times a day. “This study brings to light a significant problem,” said Stephen Coggeshall, chief technology…………………continues on ABC News

A growing number of South Floridians who are victims of tax-related identity theft are turning to their U.S. senators and congressmen for help, and their refunds are being expedited.
